I believe it is also important to include stakeholders from outside an organization in the strategic planning process. This does not necessarily mean that external stakeholders should be the ultimate decision makers, but that their feedback at the very least should be gathered and taken into account in the strategic planning process. I believe this for a few reasons. First, often times stakeholders play a part in organizations’ processes so, taking into account an external stakeholder’s feedback will help an organization inform a strategic plan that will work for both the organization and stakeholders. Additionally, I think laypeople from the public absolutely should be included in some strategic planning processes. Often times, the public is an organization’s customers, so at the very least, from a strategic plan for service delivery, absolutely the public should be involved. An organization can plan all they want, but if the plan does not work for their stakeholders and/or their customers, the plan ultimately is a failure.
