Here are a few tips about Unit IV’s Complete section.  As a general rule of thumb, I’ll be looking for your responses to contain relevant facts about events transpiring between 1945 and 1968, a period which saw some of the most harrowing moments of the Cold War as well as the rise of American affluence.

Here are some thoughts about the questions and a few links to some relevant Crash Course videos.  As always, these videos should supplement, not supplant, course materials.

For the first aspect of the question, bring in key concepts such as ideological differences between democratic capitalism and “command economy” (totalitarian) communism.  are the Truman Doctrine, the rise of NATO and the Warsaw Pact, the Korean War and, of course, the Cuban Missile Crisis which nearly ended the whole concept of human civilization.  Also relevant is the concept of the “Third World” and the ideological struggle for “hearts and minds” during this time of Superpower competition for allies.

As for the rise of McCarthyism, consider the social and political threats the 1st Amendment faces when we the people, home of the brave, are not feeling all that valiant.  In the late forties and early fifties, there was a lot to fear: the Soviets had successfully tested an atomic bomb, war had broken out in Korea, China had gone communist.  Were there traitors in the State Department helping our adversaries undermine our way of life?  One senator from Wisconsin sure seemed to think so, using this second Red Scare to empower himself through fanning fear.

The Civil Rights movement was and remains the struggle for this nation to live up to its expressed ideals of inclusion, liberty and justice for all. Here is . As for the Great Society, Lyndon Johnson is one of the most fascinating figures of post WWII American history, a Southern politician responsible for legislation to undermine and defeat the laws of the Jim Crow South. Evaluate the “Great Society” programs — their successes and their failures — independently of this week’s Discussion topic that pertains LBJ’s foreign policy, i.e. Vietnam.

As always, please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly should you need any assistance with the course or the content.  I am very much here to help.
