Pharmacogenetics Summary:

A review was conducted by Fricke-Galindo & Falfn-Valencia, (2021) on the pharmacogenetics approach for the improvement of Covid-19 treatment. The authors note that the treatment of Covid-19 has been a challenge, and the efficacy of various drugs has been evaluated with an observation of their variability undertaken. The authors state that the variability could be explained by pharmacogenetics, and this could then be used to improve patient outcomes with this disease. They note that various issues related to disease need to be reviewed when the pharmacogenetic study of Covid-19 is undertaken. The review aimed to provide a description of the pharma genetic variants reported for the drugs used for the treatment of Covid-19, and these are oseltamivir, lopinavir, dexamethasone, remdesivir, ritonavir, hydroxychloroquine, ivermectin, chloroquine, and azithromycin.

Nursing Practice Considerations:

Pharmacogenetics is the study of how a persons genes affect how the body responds to drugs whenever they are sick (Daly, 2017). The review raises various nursing practice considerations which need to be taken into consideration to ensure that the drugs given for the treatment of Covid-19 are effective depending on a person’s genetics. It proves that the variance in how drugs work between people can be attributed to genetics, and therefore, it is necessary to learn more and understand how a person’s body responds to a particular Covid-19 treatment and then make decisions on the best drug based on the genetics of the patient. The recommendation is that because Covid-19 has not been there for a long time, there is a need for more studies to understand the level at which the genetics of an individual impacts their response to diseases (Takahashi et al., 2020). Furthermore, other factors such as interactions between drugs also need to be considered so that a personalized therapy can be found for Covid-19.
