Think about your parenting experience. As explained in the week 1 module, You have three options of engaging in a parenting experience.
-
Option 1: Raise a Virtual Child: If you purchased the REVEL e-text, you should have access to the Virtual Child program. Look for the last assignment on the list. If not, you can go to www.myvirtualchild.com, create an account and pay about $50 to access a Virtual Child. If you purchase a Virtual Child separately from the textbook, the Class Code is 28724. If you have already raised a virtual child for another class, you do not have to raise another one. You can reflect on the experience youve already had in your previous class.
-
Option 2: Interview a Parent: Here are interview questions Download interview questions that will assist you in completing the discussion prompts in Step 3 if you decide to interview a parent. These are the questions we are focusing on for this week:
- What was one challenge or strength that was experienced with respect to cognitive development?
- What are one or two specific things that you think helped support the child’s cognitive development? Or, what do you think could be changed to better support the child’s cognitive development?
- In what ways is your child good at learning? What types of things do they learn easily?
- In what ways has your child learned executive functioning skills (e.g. self-control, and being flexible when needed)?
- What types of things (e.g. skills, manners, values, customs) has your child learned from watching and engaging with your family?
-
Option 3: You are a Parent: If you are actually a parent, you can write about your own reflections on parenting. No need to raise a virtual child if you already have a real one!
Then:
Write a paragraph or two that addresses the following prompts:
-
Describe in detail a specific challenge or strength that was experienced with respect to cognitive development. Possible topics include learning literacy and math concepts, funds of knowledge, executive functioning skills, or any other topic pertaining to cognitive development that was discussed in the course material.
-
Describe in detail one or two specific things that you think helped support the child’s cognitive development. Alternatively, describe what you think could have been changed to better support the child’s cognitive development. Again, possible topics include learning literacy and math concepts, funds of knowledge, executive functioning skills, or any other topic pertaining to cognitive development that was discussed in the course material.
Your paragraph should incorporate at least one quote from the textbook and/or the other readings to support your thinking. Remember to cite your source, and unpack the quote in your own words.
Finally: Indicate that you engaged with peers about this topic (or you were the first to post in your group)
- You might comment on windows (a new idea) and mirrors (something that reflects your own views) you experienced while engaging with a peer (either during class discussion or from reading another person’s post). Another option is to say what the post or class discussion made you wonder, e.g. “I notice so and so said…, which made me made me wonder…” These are options — there are many ways to indicate genuine engagement with your peer’s ideas. You can also compare and contrast your different parenting experiences.
To receive full credit:
- You are the first person to post OR you indicate that you engaged with peer about this topic.
- You actually answer all of the questions in the discussion prompt.
- You incorporate the readings/resources as outlined in the discussion prompt (quote and cite!).
- The response is a solid paragraph in length.
