Instructions: I want you to write a short obituary using the attached scenario. Watch the short video on how I want the obit structured. There is a very specific structure and format I want you to use for this exercise and the story next week. Your obit needs to be 200-250 words, double-spaced and follow the structure I have detailed in the video.
You will be graded on the writing (grammar, punctuation, syntax, spelling, AP style), following the instructions and parameters I have laid out, and following the structure that I want.
Advice: I recommend you read the NY Times obit for this weeks reading response before you complete this assignment. The structure and format I want you to use is the same that the NY Times writers use.
On Thursday night, the Johnson family lost its patriarch, 95-year-old Randal Johnson, to congestive heart failure. He passed away peacefully surrounded by friends and family at his home in downtown Houston. Johnson lived a long, fulfilling life as the father of four, grandfather to 10 and great-grandfather to two. As a youngster, he grew up in Huntsville, graduated from Huntsville High School and later from Sam Houston State University with a criminal justice degree. He worked in the Houston Police Department for 36 years, including four years as police chief, before holding the post of security chief for the Houston Astros for 10 years. During his time with the Astros, he implemented many security procedures that are now common across all major sports, including the addition of metal detectors at park entrances and installation of security cameras throughout the park. He is survived by three of his children, nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. His three remaining children followed his footsteps and joined law enforcement. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church and he will be buried in the graveyard behind the church following the service.
