The method of conduction of this study will be as follows:

  • 1. A review to comparison all national and international IE AP guidelines (this   will be done via systematic review) 
  • 2. Questionnaires to hospital Chief Medical Officers of government hospitals  on and if any existing Infective Endocarditis  Antibiotic Prophylaxis protocol in hospital
  • 3. Two seperate questionnaires to dentists and medical doctors on the            knowledge, attitude and practice of Infective Endocarditis Antibiotic                Prophylaxis along with which guideline is predominantly used
  • 4. Retrospective cross-sectional study to investigate Infective Endocarditis      incidence in the government hospitals for the last 10 years and which were on Antibiotic Prophylaxiss for dental procedures 

Description

  • For the retrospective based literature research, the utilized search engines will be PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, Science Direct, Web of Science, Medline, EMBASE and Ovid. The keyword searches will be infective endocarditis, infective endocarditis antibiotic prophylaxis and infective endocarditis antibiotic prophylaxis guidelines. 
  • A questionnaire will be formulated exploring the existence of protocols in the hospital, the existence of a dental and cardiac unit, the inquiry of infective endocarditis antibiotic prophylaxis guideline protocol and if so which guideline/s is followed if any. 
  • A questionnaire will be formulated exploring dentists and medical doctors knowledge, attitude and practice of IE AP. A brief description of the three guidelines and their year of update will be mentioned along with which once they believe is more effective, an estimate of how many patients they see a year for IE AP. 
  • Based on the behavioral change science theory, the questionnaire will be used to collect information on opportunities and motivations that could make dentists and medical doctors stick to one of the guidelines over the other.
  • A retrospective data will be request from all hospitals to look at the incidence of infective endocarditis in the last 10 years and to identify their IE risk factor and the IE AP history of each case for dental procedures.
