Personality Psychology
Summer 2018
Exam 1
Instructions: This exam is open book. You may use whatever notes you desire. Please note that for many questions, there is not one “set right answer”- just well thought out answers. You should focus your attention on explaining the what and the why (Why does this happen? How does this impact us? I will be grading answers partially on how well you can apply the material).
- What are the Id, Ego, and Superego? How do they impact our actions? What effect do they have on each other?
- What were Freud’s limitations? Why did the Neo-Freudians disagree with Freud?
-
- Name and describe (briefly!) each of Erikson’s Stages of Development
- Pick any one stage and discuss what happens if problems occur at that stage
- How does birth order impact children? What does Adler say about birth order and personality?
- What is the Oedipus complex? According to Freud, why do boys develop Oedipus complexes?
- How is the role of the person versus the situation different? How does Murray define “press”? Why do we need to consider both of them in studying personality?
- What are the criticisms and defenses of the trait approach? What is your opinion and why about the trait approach?
