Research Process Step 3 and Step 4

Research Process Step 3 will give you an opportunity to receive feedback on your thesis as you continue to refine it.  Step 4 will demonstrate how you would evaluate a scholastic article for relevance and validity in supporting your thesis.

Please create only one Word doc which contains both steps. Suggested: Enable editing of this document, type your responses directly on the document, save file to your computer, and submit by the deadline.

Due: July 22

Step 3:

Proposed Thesis:

As mentioned in the criteria for the Fences Research essay, thesis statements should be analytical in nature, avoid the use of first person, the “announcement tone,” (i.e. “This essay will examine..”) and can be 1-3 sentences in length. Thesis statements can be implied or explicit. There is an example of a model thesis within the directions for the essay and students may also view the thesis given in the sample research paper under Module 8.

Please present your refined thesis below: *Note, if play title and author’s name are not in your thesis statement, I am going to assume that you present this information prior to thesis, within your introduction.

Step 4:

Evaluating a Research Source:

Class, please select a research source from one of PGCC’s library databases that you feel could be used to effectively support your thesis and/or points within your essay. As mentioned, a good place to start is Gale Literature, but you can certainly branch off into other databases such as ProQuest, InfoTrac, Bloom’s Literature and so forth. Then, evaluate the source using the provided five questions (these questions occur after the screenshots):

Here are some tips with screenshots attached:

Click on Library Resources in our Canvas course menu.

Click on A-Z Database List               SCROLL

Click on the “G” and then “Gale Literature:”

SCROLL

You can start by doing a Basic Search and type “Fences August Wilson” in the search box.

See articles that come up:

You can also explore other key words like “August Wilson:”  SCROLL

See other scholastic articles that come up:

Then, evaluate the source for validity/relevance by answering the following FIVE questions:

  1. What is the name of your article and where was it accessed? (give the specific database title)
  2. Who is the author(s) or sponsoring organization (if no author is given)? What can you determine about the credentials/credibility of this author? If there are no credentials given for the author or organization, consider googling the author.
  3. What is the article about? What is the quality of the information? You may also consider the following when answering this question: What is the focus of the text and how thoughtful and research-based is it? This response should be a brief paragraph.
  4. When was the article published? If it’s somewhat old, is the information still relevant?
  5. How do you feel this source can strengthen your essay/support your thesis? Be specific.
