For this assignment, you are asked to take a position on an issue in medical ethics and to express the reasons for this view. Assignment: For this research paper, you will write and present a four to five page (double-spaced) paper in response to a specific and new question in Medical Ethics. The general topic may connect with someone else that we’ve studied this term, but you need to find a specific question that allows for new and deeper inquiry. It needs to be a topic in Medical Ethics and not just an ethical topic. (For example, environmental ethics is not a medical ethics issue although trans rights to health care services is a medical ethics issue.) This paper will ultimately be a position paper, arguing for your ethical position on the topic. You are not graded on your position, of course, but you are graded on the clarity and strength of your argument for this position. Remember to provide evidence for your view, as it is sometimes easier to just explain (sometimes quite emotionally) what one thinks is right or wrong rather than arguing for the view (providing the rational reasons in support of the view). Focus on arguing for your view, using good research and ethical principles to make your case. Introduction/Thesis: State your own position as a thesis statement in the introductory paragraph of your paper. Also, in this thesis statement in the introduction, identify the main reasons that you will offer in support of your view. Then develop the body of your paper around these reasons. Body of Your Paper/Argue for Your Position: In arguing for your position, you’ll need to provide empirical data (facts based on research) and ethical principles in support of your view. We have already studied ethical theories and principles that you can draw on, and you should use your research to bring new facts to light in the topic of your choosing. Consider Counter-Argument: If you are trying for an “A” on this paper, then you need to consider the best counter-argument you can conceive of on the topic. Refute this argument with facts and/or ethical principles in order to prove your own position in the end. You will likely need to have the five page paper in this case. (As you know from your reading of the philosophers in the “Readings” this term, we tend to represent the views of those with whom we disagree in order to address these concerns when making our own case. You’ll need to do that for an A on this paper.) Sources: You will need to use at least three quality sources in the paper, other than your book. (Note, though, that your book may suggest some sources to independently explore in your research. You could certainly use those sources.) Citation (MLA): Students are expected to provide in-text citation (in the body of their paper as needed) and also a Works Cited at the end of the paper. Please use the MLA citation style. If you need help with citation, go to the college website tutorial: http://research.anokaramsey.edu/rqs.phtml?subject_id=59. Overall Quality of Writing: Students are expected to clearly organize the ideas in their papers, and to proofread for smooth transitions, proper spelling and grammar.
