Well, it’s almost that time of the year. It’s almost flu season, and we all know what that means, the flu shot. CVS already has the sign-up. It is not even time to get it unless it is for nursing students’ clinical clearance. I wouldn’t say I like the flu vaccine because sometimes I get so sick. I am nervous that another variant of COVID could happen again, making flu season even more challenging for us healthcare workers. I am sure people will be lined up as soon as they can receive it. I do not want people to get sick. I watched “Grey’s Anatomy” the other day; and it was the episode of the flu season, and I thought that no one was wearing a mask. It feels weird seeing a medical show pre-COVID. Do I believe flu season, even pre-COVID, should have had masks? Yes, I do. It is still summer, and we have had very few, almost no COVID patients at my work, and I am tired of the masks. It’s now causing injury to my ears, and I feel closterphobic. The masks break easily; families do not want to wear them, and most of all, if the visitor is not fully vaccinated, they can not visit their loved ones. Now, add the flu vaccine on top.

Hospitals need to start being fully stocked with PPE because the cold weather will be here before we know it “during most flu seasons, individuals who are 65 years+ tend to bear the greatest burden of severe flu disease up to85%of flu deaths and 70% of flu hospitalizations” (Flu Death Statistics From 2010 – 2020, 2022). I think the masks would be more appropriate for flu season than other seasons because our immunity needs to get stronger. I can honestly say that almost every person I know who wore a mask religiously had COVID once, twice, and thrice. I think simple face masks are inappropriate for 8, 12, or 16-hour shifts. Also, COVID is airborne; influenza is a “droplet” precaution (DMC, 2022). Schools in the area where the flu impacts a lot of people would be like New England, mainly from the city’s close contact and cold weather changes. I think schools might make it mandatory for people to wear masks again during those months.

A CHS can collaborate with settings where vulnerable populations are and protect them from getting sick or, if they get sick, prevent them from being admitted to the hospital. In my years of working in hospitals and being in schools, the cleaning needs to increase. I do not see much cleaning during the night hours and have to use products that are non toxic, of course, but, do not do the job. Lysol disinfectant wipes are not the only good products on the market.
