Unstructured data can be challenging in a healthcare system due to the lack of management over this type of data. Though about 80% of medical data is unstructured, it is largely ignored and forgotten about in the abyss. This leaves heaps of data untouched and under-utilized in research. Unmanaged, unstructured data also creates obstacles for the advancement of medical artificial intelligence and technology as interoperability between systems is nearly impossible if the data cannot be translated or converted to be of use.
Control and structure of this data can be implemented to help an entity become more effective in their practice by establishing standards and processes for their metadata. Categorization and indexing will improve organization and allow easier data extraction.

Unstructured data is data like pictures or text that can’t be categorized or organized easily by the computer system and need extra help organizing this data better though software or other means. I know from experience that our EHR system can’t display X-ray images without a separate program installed to display those images correctly. With the proper software or patches to the system unstructured will not be as much of a problem.
