Choose one of the following essay prompts and write a clear, detailed, logical essay.
Why has Reconstruction been viewed as promising, but ultimately a failure? Who was it a failure for? Someone always benefits from failure, so who benefited from Reconstruction failing? Do you think Reconstruction was a failure? Why or why not?
What were the main beliefs of the New South promoters? How did those beliefs clash with the Lost Cause ideology? Did a New South emerge in the late 19th century? Give examples of how it did or did not change to back up your argument.
What were the major differences between the presidential and congressional plans for Reconstruction? How did reconstruction politics, both North and South, change over time, from 1865 to 1877? Why did Reconstruction end the way it did?
Discuss the rise of cities in the late 19th century. Why did people begin to move to the cities? What innovations and inventions allowed for industrialism and mechanization that spurred migration to cities? How did the growth of cities change America during this time period?
The frontier was declared closed in 1890. What drove westward expansion from the 1860s up to 1890? Discuss any policies, reasons people moved west, and/or technological innovations that occurred during this time period.
Discuss the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments. Why are these amendments important? Some historians have stated that Reconstruction was a Second American Revolution due to these amendments. Why do you think that is? Do you agree?
