A speech about the student’s career choices, hopes, and aspirations will be created and presented by the student. In this speech the student must make clear to the audience how and when steps will be taken in their career journey, and which is expected to be the most interesting, or hardest, or most fulfilling time. Usually, a topic that comes from the student’s own experiences or passions makes for the best topic—but then must be supported by experts which can be accessed from internet articles.

In this speech, you will tell us about the career you want to have with the company you would like to work for. We need to know all the basics, like what is the starting job going to be like, where do you want to work (corporate or a branch office, local or global?), what kind of upward mobility exists there (do they only promote from within?), what position do you think you will be in two years from now, five years out, ten? Do you have a specific agenda when working for this company, like, you would like to convince them to buy transit passes for all workers to reduce stress, traffic, and personal transit expenses; or to let you bring your dog to work; or to build on-campus gardens for all employees to share in the work and the yield? Do you want to take what you have learned and start your own company one day? Or a non-profit organization where your career experiences will help the community house more homeless people?

Inspired: A former student found himself surprised when the little league team his son played baseball for needed an accountant (the previous one ran off with money–grrrr!). That student had never thought about how his experience as a tax accountant was just what the team needed, and eventually, he ended up running the books for the entire league. He did so much for them, he quit his “full time job” and went to work for himself, passed the CPA exam, and never “worked” another day in his life. He honestly had never thought his job as an accountant would be fun–but he ended up living a dream he never knew he had! Now that’s a career!!!
