Social gerontology is a science-based, but application-oriented, subdiscipline of gerontology. It focuses particularly on social relationships in old age, social participation of elderly and older people, and the protection of their individual needs.  Social gerontology also addresses the needs of the elderly by using the lens of social justice.

 

Students will select a topic in social gerontology that personally interests them and/or has relevance to the future of social work practice. The annotated bibliography must include three (3) peer-reviewed scholarly journal articles relevant to the selected topic.

2-3 Pages not including cover, reference page.

 

Requirements for the articles:

  • Three (3) peer reviewed journal articles are required. The journal articles must have been published between 2017 and 2022.
  • The content of each journal article must include subject matter that addresses social justice issues related to elderly/senior citizens.
  • No meta-analyses or systematic reviews
  • No government reports
  • No white papers or issue papers
  • No editorials, letters to the editor, commentaries, opinion pieces, or introductions
  • No popular magazine articles
  • No books
  • No articles based on content and/or research studies outside of the United States
  • No articles for which you cannot provide a full citation for the article using APA format, and/or, have only an internet URL

 

Required content for each annotation:

  • Summarize the article’s assessment and/or description of the topic as it applies to social justice and senior citizens/the elderly.
  • Describe the social justice issue(s) addressed in the article.
