Section—search criteria
Title (1 point):
• Describes lab content concisely, adequately & appropriately
Abstract (4 points):
• Adequately summarizes the entire lab report.
• Gives reader general idea of the background, methods, results and conclusions.
Introduction (6 points):
• Includes relevant background information obtained from other sources
• Includes relevant information about the organism studied, including scientific name and common name
• Successfully establishes the scientific concept of the lab
• Effectively presents questions addressed & hypothesis for experimental procedure; provides rationale for
hypothesis
Materials & Methods (5 points):
• Appropriately explains how experiment was set up
• Includes appropriate references if methods obtained from other source
• Explanation of methods is sufficient for someone to reproduce experiment
Results (5 points):
• Written portion describes the data accurately, without making conclusions
• Presents data in a graphic format (table and/or figure) accurately & in an easy to read format
• Format of tables or figures is correct with appropriate titles and axis labels (Graph)
Discussion (6 points):
• Describes whether results confirmed hypothesis
• Explains any unexpected results or provides support for expected results; utilizes information from other sources
to help provide these explanations
• Describes the implication of the results; describes what has been learned by the experiment
• Describes possible sources of error and ways that the experiment can be improved
Overall presentation (1 point):
• Grammar and spelling are correct, writing is clear and report is written in scientific style
• Lab report avoids using quotations from other sources; instead information from other sources is paraphrased and
cited
Citations (2 points):
• Information obtained from other works are properly cited using APA format within the text
• Citations in references section adhere to the proper APA format
• Uses at least two sources (not including lab manual)
IF NO CITATIONS ARE PROVIDED FOR INFORMATION OBTAINED FROM OTHER SOURCES, THE
LAB REPORT WILL AUTOMATICALLY EARN A SCORE OF ZERO.
