  1. Why is it important to create a bridge between home culture and classroom culture?

To be a culturally responsive teacher, building a bridge between home culture and classroom culture is essential. When a teacher creates positive classroom culture, the student’s differences become their strengths. By knowing students and their cultural backgrounds, teachers can create instructional approaches that enable all students to succeed.

  1. How can creating a classroom that incorporates culturally relevant pedagogy help children grow as learners and as people?

The teacher that incorporates culturally relevant pedagogy would always use and model respectful language, behavior, and discussion habits to create a classroom culture. It is vital to implement instructional practices that are culturally sensitive and relative to the child’s experience. As a result, children will assimilate the information better and develop and become confident learners.

  1. How can we bridge the gap between home and school while remote teaching during the pandemic? What techniques might be helpful?

The begging of the pandemic was extremely hard for all teachers, students, and their families. Today, we can speak about strategies that teachers used: some were helpful, others not. Unfortunately, I don’t have that type of experience, but I have many teachers’ friends who went through this difficult time. Start your day with small talk is one of the great strategies. It allows a teacher to relax students and identify if anyone is emotionally unstable. Also, establishing a routine and rules for virtual learning will help in managing the student’s behavior. As a teacher, we always should be available for our students to scaffold them in their learning. Sometimes, it can benefit from scheduling a one-to-one meeting with your students and assist them in tasks that they have not reached yet. Providing ongoing feedback and verbal prompts are helpful when teaching students virtually. It shows them that a teacher cares about each of them and is here to help. Also, I believe that cooperating with parents and establishing healthy teacher-parent relationships are essential during this period to approach students to success.

Building a cultural learning environment in the classroom is very important because the classroom is the foundation for learning and development So, building a connection between home and school culture is vital because it ensures that students are appreciating and incorporating other students’ cultural beliefs and practices. Teachers and students have to practice interacting and working together to build a functioning community of learners.

To become a teacher in the classroom we have to be able to be culturally responsive to other people’s cultures. We have to be able to interact with parents and staff members from different cultural backgrounds. So when a teacher incorporates these practices in the classroom it allows students to feel like they are a part of the classroom. It also allows them to feel a sense of belonging and they will want to participate and play an active role in the classroom. Teachers can create projects for students to do with families to study other people’s cultures and present these projects on poster boards. Doing these activities would allow families to learn more about each other’s culture, beliefs and customs. When families learn about other family cultures, they are able to build a relationship with both teachers and families.

Ensuring cultural diversity in the classroom is essential because there are many students from different backgrounds. So, providing support and equal opportunities for all students help to foster a productive learning environment. This would allow student to attend school each day because they feel safe.

A learning environment that provides equal opportunities for all students to learn is one that promotes a productive environment. Enforcing cultural awareness in the classroom is fundamental to build a gap between different cultures. his helps to foster relationship.

During the pandemic remote learning was the most essential part of students’ education during that time. Students were highly engaged while others became a little distracted.  Through fun and interactive learning children were able to communicate virtually on the computer. Even though it was challenging at times, parents ensure that students participate online. I remember working with the teacher at that time. She would allow students to get their favorite toy or book every Friday and allow students to share and play with each other. This was fun and entertaining for the children. They would also go on virtual field trips. The students would enjoy this virtual tour to the zoo. They would laugh with each other and have fun. During these wonderful moment on zoom the students are willing to play and share.

Lynch, E., & Hanson, M. (2011). Developing Cross-Cultural Competence, A Guide for Working with Children and Their Families

  1. Classmate I need feed back and unswer question please! (A)
  1. Why is it important to create a bridge between home culture and classroom culture?
It is important to create a bridge between home culture and classroom culture because as Lynch & Hanson (2011) stated, cultural differences are viewed as a strength children bring into the classroom, and we should continuously strive to acknowledge, appreciate, and celebrate diversity. Self-awareness about one’s own culture is the foundation when it comes to learning about other cultures. An individual cannot be truly sensitive to someone else’s culture until they are sensitive of their own, and understanding that the values, beliefs, and practices can shape one’s cultural identity (Lynch & Hanson, 2011).
  2. A way to bridge the gap between home culture and classroom culture is through culturally responsive teaching. Culturally responsive teaching is defined as understanding students’ cultural differences as an asset to teaching by incorporating students’ customs, personal experiences, beliefs, and perspectives for improving classroom instructions to meet the needs of all students (Will & Najarro, 2022). As an educator, it is important for me include cultural differences into my curriculum, in order for students to gain their sense of identity, learn about other cultures from their peers, as well as break any underlying biases and stereotypes. When all students feel valued and welcomed in their classroom community, they will be more engaged and motivated to learn. I also believe that culturally responsive teaching goes beyond the classroom, such as involving families, and their communities during school activities or events.
  3. Developing cross-cultural competence will also bridge the gap between home and classroom cultures. Lynch & Hanson (2011) defines cross-cultural competence as being able to think, feel, and act in a way that appreciates and respects the different cultural, linguistic, and ethnic backgrounds. This is important for me to continue in my practice in order to communicate effectively with students and their families in order to provide students the best learning experience possible. Being cross-cultural competence will teach me to remove any bias, stereotypes, or generalizations I might have about another culture. There are many ways to develop cross-cultural competence, such as reading books or articles about other cultures, as well as interacting with people from different cultural backgrounds.
  4. How can creating a classroom that incorporates culturally relevant pedagogy help children grow as learners and as people?
Creating a classroom that incorporates culturally relevant pedagogy will help children grow as learners and as people because children are provided with the opportunity to learn more about their cultural identity, as well as learning about other cultures from their peers. CREC (2011) states that it is important to let students take their cultural identity and express it into their learning, as it will allow them to form their sense of identity and relate to what they are learning. It is crucial for teachers to be sensitive and mindful of what we choose to teach and what materials we are using. Doing so, all students will be able to find a piece of themselves in a lesson in order to form their sense of identity, and to also learn about their peers’ cultural background. How I incorporate a culturally relevant pedagogy in my classroom is through multi-literacy, such as using books with authors from different cultural backgrounds, as well as ensuring the images in the book represents all students. Educators should take students’ personal experiences and use it as a foundation for further learning to support students in making connections with what they are learning to their own lives (CREC, 2011). A culturally relevant pedagogy promotes inclusivity and a community that is accepting of all cultural differences. Our students come first, so instead of expecting students to adapt to the ways of a school, the school needs to adapt and modify to students’ cultural differences (Learning for Justice, 2010).
  5. How can we bridge the gap between home and school while remote teaching during the pandemic? What techniques might be helpful?
When the pandemic happened, online teaching and remote learning was a sudden change for both educators and students. Mahmood (2020) expressed that one important element was missing with online teaching, which was the personal connection and relationships we build with the students. A way to bridge the gap between home and school while remote teaching is through a culturally responsive approach in order to promote teacher-student relationships, create student-centered lessons, and to meet the needs of all students (Mahmood, 2020). It can be as simple as taking the time to get to know students through informal conversations. It is just as important to provide students the opportunity to get to know you as their teacher. Building trusting learning relationship is the foundation of culturally responsive teaching, and as online teaching makes everyone feel a bit vulnerable due to being in our home environments, building that trust is crucial (Mahmood, 2020). Taking the time to speak to our students in an informal way prior to an actual lesson creates a high-trust community. Provide opportunities for students to engage in activities together to build positive relationships among their peers. Ensuring that our instructions are student-centered can also bridge the gap between home and school. Teachers should take into consideration students’ interests, such as how they like to learn. For example, some students might like to learn through videos or lectures. Mahmood (2020) stated that our lessons should be designed around students’ interests and needs. Lastly, it is also important to meet the needs of communal learners, as remote learning often caters toward independent learners. A way to meet the needs of communal learners is through gamified teaching, such as using a platform like Kahoot. To conclude, educators should take the teaching strategies they use in the classroom and apply or modify it accordingly toward online teaching to bridge the gap between home and school.
