USE NOTES ABOVE TO DO ASSIGNMENT AS WELL

Purpose: The intention behind this assignment is to learn more about the roles that women of color played in the creation and passing of Title IX and to created a cohesive essay based on what you’ve learned.

Skills: This assignment will help you to gain or improve upon the following skills, which are essential for your success in this course:

  • Argument–the ability to explain your own point of view and show the reader why you are right.
  • Analysis – the ability to use the evidence to show the reader why your argument is right. (Please note that this is not simply using quotes but explaining why they are important for your argument.)
  • Research
  • Effective use of primary sources
  • Effective use of secondary sources
  • Critical thinking

Task: Write a 2-3 page paper addressing the prompt below. Your essay should be double-spaced, with one inch margins. Please be sure to use Times New Roman font. Your essay must have an introduction with a coherent argument as well as a conclusion. I will expect you to use direct evidence from the provided sources as well as your own additional research from 3 other sources. Be sure to use citations where needed! Footnotes or in text citation are acceptable. Papers submitted without citations will receive a zero!

Based on what you’ve learned about Title IX from lecture videos, the Patsy Mink documentary, and additional research from at least 3 other sources, write a 2 – 3 page essay discussing the ways that women, and especially women of color, helped to get this law passed. In your essay, be sure to explain what Title IX does and why it is important.

Resources: You will need to research 3 sources in addition to these. USE LINKS BELOW

Criteria for Success: While there are many different ways to approach this prompt, there are certain things that I am looking for in your papers.

  1. I expect that you will use complete sentences with proper grammar. This is an essay and a formal assignment, so you want to take the time to turn in a polished finished product. Proofread carefully AND use your spell checker.
  2. I expect that you will use evidence from all relevant sources.
  3. That evidence MUST be properly cited.
  4. Provide a clear argument and show me how you are going to prove it in your introduction.
  5. Provide a clear conclusion showing me how you have proved your point throughout your essay.
  6. I expect you to show me you’re thinking. I am familiar with this history, but I don’t know what you are thinking. I don’t know how you are processing the information. Give me a little insight into your intellectual world. This does not necessarily mean writing your essay in the first person, but it means taking a clear position on why this document is important for understanding this period in history.

Assignment # 2

DISCUSSION: Harlem Renaissance

PROMPT:

The Harlem Renaissance was a golden age for African American artists, writers and musicians. It was the first time that a considerable number of mainstream publishers and critics took African American arts seriously, and it was the first time that African American arts attracted significant attention from the nation at large. It gave African American artists pride in and control over how the Black experience was represented in American culture, as well as a means to express their history, their frustrations, and their hopes for the future, setting the stage for the civil rights movement.

“We younger negro artists who create now intend to express our individual dark-skinned selves without fear or shame. If white people are pleased we are glad. If they are not, it doesn’t matter. We know we are beautiful…”  —Langston Hughes, 1925 (Harlem Renaissance novelist and poet)

How does the music of William Grant Still fit the ideals of the Harlem Renaissance, as expressed in the Suite for Violin? Is there an African American artist/musician/writer today that embodies the principals of the Harlem Renaissance in modern times?
