I learned many things throughout this course, as each week brought up new subjects. However, the most interesting things I learned about were holistic care, leadership, and incivility. Holistic care was probably the most interesting subject because I have always believed in caring for patients as a whole and not just addressing their symptoms or current problem. I enjoyed taking a deeper dive into it and learning more about the comprehensive model of caring (Zamanzadeh et al., 2015), as my approach as a nurse practitioner will be focused on the whole patient. I also found the module on leadership to be one of the most important subjects I learned about because nurse practitioners are considered leaders. As someone going into that role, I want to learn as much about leadership as possible. I can take what I learned about leadership, including the styles of leadership, and decide which style works best for me and implement it into my practice. Another subject that I found both important and interesting was incivility. As much as it saddened me to learn about how common incivility is and how much it occurs, I considered ways to prevent it in the workplace as a nurse practitioner. I will be able to take what I learned and not let my “power position” cause incivility between e and the rest of the staff, as that has been found to cause non-civil behavior (Atashzadeh et al., 2021).
To ensure my success throughout the rest of the master’s program, I plan on doing a few things. The first one is to give myself grace. I will stay organized using a planner and continue working part-time throughout the program. I will also continue to give myself time to complete my assignments and to study the material. I need to understand that it is important to try my best throughout the program, but I will not always be perfect or receive the perfect grade that I would like, but that does mean that I am failing.
