Part 1

  1. Choose one poet from the following lists of “best” poets:
  2. Read one of his or her poems and post the poem to the DB window.
  3. Include the poet’s name, title of poem, and date.
  4. Include a brief biography of the poet.
  5. Evaluate the poem by explaining, in essay format, four of the following terms as defined in the textbook reading this week: language and rhythm, imagery, figures, metaphors, symbols, allegory, rhyme, alliteration, assonance, consonance, meter.
  6. What is the meaning or message of the poem?

Part 2

  1. Choose a word or phrase from the poem in Part 1 that triggers a feeling, reaction, memory, or image for you.
  2. Inspired by the poem you chose in Part 1, write a poem of your own (at least five lines in length).
  3. What is the title of your poem? How specifically did the poem in Part 1 inspire you?
  4. Post your poem to the DB window to share with the class.

NOTE: You will not be graded on literary style or technique. The key here is to use your imagination to “paint” an idea, feeling, or emotion with words.
