Survey of American Literature: Exploration through the Civil War

Writers often use imagery to stir the emotions of their readers. Imagery involves words and descriptions that appeal to at least one of the reader’s five senses: sight, smell, taste, sound, and touch. Those images often trigger some sort of response. For instance, a description of someone scraping their finger nails over a chalk board or of the sound of dead leaves crackling behind you as you walk alone through a cemetery. The romantics are masters at employing imagery in their works.

Choose an author from this week’s readings and discuss his use of imagery in one or more of his works. What type of effect does it have on YOU as you read? Explain.
