Topic: Government Control

Literary Theory: Marxist literary theory

Research Question:

Is the government control of individuals justified?

Argumentative Thesis:

The government is not justified in its own actions towards individuals.

The topic Story is: “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut

Topic: Your Response Paper assignment this week is to write an Annotated Bibliography compiling works cited entries and brief summaries of several sources related to your working thesis idea in some way. This assignment should be used in your Week 7 Research Paper.

Remember that your Week 7 Research Paper must make an argumentative claim about the works we have read in the class using a literary criticism/theory of your choice (I highly recommend the Purdue OWL source).

This week’s response paper is a list of citations to books, articles, and documents that are relevant to your topic and should be used to help write your paper for week 7. Each citation is followed by a brief (usually about 150-200 words) descriptive and evaluative set of paragraphs—this is known as the annotation.

The purpose of each annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the source cited.

DO NOT include a primary source as one of your entries. For example, if “Trifles” is one of your stories, then you may not include “Trifles” as an Annotated Bibliography entry; however, you would have entries that are criticisms of the play or about the author, or a site like Purdue OWL that defines your chosen literary criticism/theory.

USE THE FORMATTED EXAMPLE DOC I HAVE GIVEN YOU!!!!!

Prompt: Develop an Annotated Bibliography using at least THREE (3) relevant secondary sources.

Remember that you are writing a paper on literature, so while you may find a historical document important to your research if you are performing a Historical Analysis, your sources must be scholarly and preferably (not mandatory) come from the Literary Resource Center in the GMC Library.

Your finished Annotated Bibliography should include three (3) source entries, with a proper citation and two annotation paragraphs for each source. Annotations include the following elements:

1) MLA Citation:  For the citation for each source, carefully follow the electronic source MLA format provided by the Purdue OWL resource

2) Summary paragraph:  Write a paragraph discussing the article’s main ideas using your own words (no quotes!)

3a) Analysis paragraph (3a and 3b are combined into a separate paragraph):  This second paragraph discusses if the source is credible. Why is the source credible, specifically (I want details)? Is it from a scholarly journal (Gale is not a journal, it’s an online library)? Who is the author and what makes them an expert?

3b) Evaluation paragraph:  Then write a brief explanation of the source’s effectiveness and how the source is relevant or useful to your research paper topic

Requirements: -10 for each requirement not met

1)  You must have a minimum of three (3) sources

2)  EACH source contains a summary paragraph

3)  EACH source contains a separate analysis/evaluation paragraph

4)  EACH source contains a properly formatted MLA citation

5)  Your finished response paper must be at least 500 words

Additional Rules:

1) You must use proper MLA formatting

2) Your sources must come from an appropriate internet site

3) You may not use Wikipedia, Sparknotes, Gradesaver, or similar sites as a source

4) Do not go over 20% similarity according to Turnitin; You may lose points and your work will be flagged for possible plagiarism

5) When using any of the stories as a source, you may only use the PDF version given to you in the resources section of this module. NA because none of your entries will be the story

6) Use only third person point of view to discuss literature. Do not use first person or second person pronouns. This is a research paper, not an opinion piece.
