Herbert Marcuses 1979 essay The Failure of the New Left?, criticized what he saw as the weaknesses of that movement that defined 1960s student radicalism. Marcuse nonetheless argued that it was not a failure despite the shortcomings he identified. He also suggested paths opened by the New Left that could direct the Left toward new avenues of critique of and opposition to advanced capitalism (the critique of culture and mainstream values, or rise of feminism for example). Identify some of what Marcuse claimed were the weaknesses of the New Left and to what degree in your view are these criticisms valid. Also, identify why given his examination of these weakness Marcuse still insisted that the New Left was not a failure, and how its influence in his view still offered fruitful avenues for the transformation of advanced capitalism into a more progressive social and economic system. Lastly, discuss what you see as any positive or negative influences that came out of the New Left from you own perspective and the reasons for your own judgments on this issue.
