5.2 Discussion. Synthesizing the Important Issues – Strategic Analysis
Getting Started
Have you ever stayed at an Airbnb property? Our discussion this week centers around this growing company that has been credited with reinventing hospitality. At the time the article was written (2018), the CEO was struggling with how to strategically plan for the future growth of the corporation. You will read all about it in the assigned Forbes article. As you do, use what you have learned thus far in this course to analyze the points of tension faced by Airbnb. Together, in this forum, we will discuss the various interests and perspectives that are critical to making wise decisions and planning strategically for a future that leads to growth rather than stagnation and perhaps even eventual collapse.
Upon successful completion of this discussion, you will be able to:
⦁ Integrate and analyze various components of strategic planning through a case study.
Background Information
“The scorecard for companies has changed. Before, it was really about financial metrics, and I think now companies are realizing we have a greater responsibility to society to make sure life is great” (Carson, 2018).
Instructions
⦁ Read the article: ⦁ New Tricks for an Old Unicorn⦁ (new tab).
⦁ View the YouTube video: Strategy Analysis and Intuitive Thinking. Note the differences in the two concepts.
⦁ In your initial discussion post (300–350 words), based on the assigned article about AirBNB, respond to the following:
⦁ In the article, that statement is made that “The result is tension between Airbnb’s need to scale (up) rapidly and Chesky’s (the CEO) desire to take it slow and build something that’s responsible and sustainable.” From that statement and your prior learning, what would be two or three factors that should be part of the discussion in shaping a strategic plan for the future of Airbnb?
⦁ The article also states that “Chesky gathered his cofounders to brainstorm guidelines that he says will help future decision-making as the company seeks to follow metrics beyond financials. ‘If you have a greater responsibility,’ Chesky says, ‘the question is, well, who do you have the responsibility to?’” From that statement, how would you answer the CEO’s question? To whom do you believe Airbnb is responsible and why?
⦁ Be sure to incorporate at least two additional sources beyond assigned material in this course.
