Lab Report: Magnetism Assignment Instructions

Overview

Laboratory reports are an essential component of a physics education.

Instructions

You will perform Activities 1–3. All photos and discussion must be submitted as a single Word document.

Activity 1

Submit a photo of the compassalong with the wire at Step 4. Include a piece of white paper with your name and the date.

Submit photo of the compass andwire at Step 9.

Describe what happens to the compass needle.

Activity 2

In this exercise you will build an electromagnet. In the process you will vary the electromagnet in various ways to study the effects of reducing the number of batteries or coil windings on the number of paper clips one can pick up with the magnet. Discuss your findings.

Submit a photo of the compass along with the prepared coil (not connected to battery) at Step 7. Include a piece of white paper with your name and the date.

Submit a photo of the compass with the electromagnet at Step 9.

Submit a photo of the electromagnet holding paper clips at Step 13.

You should complete all steps in Activity 2 and discuss your observations.

Activity 3

Submit a photo of the setup at step 7 with a piece of white paper withyour name and the date.

Submit a photo at step 9 and includea discussion of what happens to the paper clip in Steps 9–10.
