Scenario:
Anne Laduke is a 32-year-old Native American female with no significant health history. This
morning she presented to her provider’s office with complaints of pain, increased redness, and
warmth of the right lower leg in the calf area. She was directly admitted to the inpatient medical
unit by her provider.
Pre-Briefing Questions:
1. Based on what you’ve learned about the nursing process, describe one applicable
nursing diagnosis, treatments, and nursing considerations for this diagnosis.
Based on what I have learned about the nursing process, one applicable nursing
diagnosis for this patient Annie Laduke, could be Ineffective Peripheral Tissue
Perfusion based on the information that has been provided. The treatment for this
diagnosis would be to provide the patient with anticoagulants such as
Heparin/warfarin or thrombolytic agents. One of the considerations for this
diagnosis would be the patient could be at risk for pulmonary embolism.
2. What are some non-pharmacological measures that can be used for pain relief in
care for this patient?
Some of the non-pharmacological measures that can be taken to relieve the patient
from any pain can be heat or cold therapy this can help the patient with any pain
or swelling they may be feeling. Another measure that can be taken is wearing
compression stocking for the swelling and promote blood flow along with
ambulation and elevation.
3. Describe the components of a peripheral vascular nursing assessment.
The components that would take place when assessing a patient with peripheral
vascular would be to inspect the patient’s skin to check for any swelling, for
symmetry/swelling, skin color, hair distribution, venous patters, and for any skin
lesions or ulcers. The nurse would start this from the upper extremities than to
lower. Palpate the skin for temperature, edema, capillary reflex, tenderness, and
pulses. And lastly the nurse would auscultate if there were any diminished
peripheral pulses or if non-palpable the doppler would be used.
