Teaching portfolio- The teaching portfolio assignment allows students to develop materials.
to prepare them to apply for a teaching-related position. The teaching portfolio includes 4
components that will be submitted together.
a.Statement of Teaching Philosophy– Many prospective academic employers require
that applicants submit a statement of teaching philosophy. In addition, the practice of
writing a teaching statement is one of the best ways to clarify your philosophy of
teaching for yourself. Therefore, all students will write a 2 – 4 page (double spaced)
statement of teaching philosophy. The statement should include What do you believe
in as a teacher? What do you hope to accomplish in the classroom? What do you want
students to leave your course(s) with? How do you try to accomplish these goals? (5%
of grade). Learning Outcome 5
b. Vitae/Resume- Most employers will also require a vitae/resume. Thus, all students
will create a curriculum vitae or resume that addresses their educational background
and experiences. (5% of grade). Learning Outcome 5
c. Cover Letter- The teaching portfolio will include a cover letter written to a possible
employer. The cover letter should include qualifications related to the position as
well as why you are interested in the position. (5% of grade). Learning Outcome 5
- d. Syllabus– Finally, the teaching portfolio will include a sample syllabus for a course in
psychology developed by the student. (5% of grade).
