 Tuesday, March 1st at 9pm the President will deliver his State of The Union.  What were the key points the President made? How Did the Republican congress member react?  In your opinion what was the one thing that surprised you? 

           Republican congress members were largely unresponsive during the address; however, there were moments when they applauded President Biden for some of his statements. One of them being the statement he gave on giving veterans the treatment they need to help with lung-related illnesses. There was also a case of heckling by two Republican representatives, Lauren Boebert and Marjorie Taylor Greene.

           The talking point that surprised me was the announcement of expanding eligibility of treatment for respiratory cancers, and other upper respiratory ailments, to veterans. I assumed that veterans had always been given what they needed medically, and otherwise, to return to society as smoothly as possible. The fact this was announced meant that veterans did not have this essential benefit.

***Student 2: President Joe Biden’s first state of the union address was first started off with the stuff happening in the country of Ukraine. He states that the world unifies and stands up to Russia, as well as having a prospect about the end of the COVID-19 pandemic. Also, Biden realizes himself that inflation is one of his top priorities in regulating prices and getting them under control. Biden mainly focused on the war happening in Ukraine a major priority in addressing to the people attending the state of the union speech, asking people in the room to cheer and applaud the leaders of Ukraine in attendance for his speech. Furthermore, voters saw the economy and inflation as its biggest concern right now, he also addresses the job gains and the growth in the economy.  He used that to counterattack the opposition of republicans in attendance, he states how he wants to push and provide more funding towards the police and better unity. A very surprising moment during this state of the union speech was that there were no masks seen. The fact that the president and the two other women behind him were not wearing masks shows that they are wanting to move past this pandemic that has been going on for more than 2 years. President Biden suggests that all the American people and children should be vaccinated and to protect those who are vulnerable. On the other hand, Biden’s message about funding the police was something people needed to hear, he states ”Fund them with the resources and training they need to protect our communities”.
