Seek first to understand, and then to be understood.
— Covey, S. (2013)
Conflict among individuals and in organizations is inevitable. Many view conflict as having a
negative connotation, but in fact, when handled properly, it can be quite positive and
constructive. The important thing to keep in mind is that it must be dealt with and not ignored
or left unresolved. There are many styles of conflict resolution, ranging from avoidance to a
very direct approach. Effective conflict management results in win-win solutions where both
parties are satisfied with the outcome. Conflict on sport teams and in sport organizations is
common and in extreme situations requires legal interventions such as mediation and
arbitration. During work stoppages or “strikes” in professional sports, for example, much time
and money is spent dealing with conflicts between owners and players, and during the long
resolution process, fans are deprived of watching their favorite teams. This results in a lose-lose
situation that requires effective conflict resolution and negotiation skills. Therefore, it is
important for sport managers to learn to negotiate and hone their conflict management skill
set.
Individuals have as many different conflict management styles as they have leadership styles.
Some individuals take a more aggressive approach, while others are more collaborative. Some
want to please the various sides to reach a win-win solution while others are more comfortable
with both a winning and losing side. As a future sport administrator, what conflict management
strategies will you need in order to be prepared for the inevitable conflicts that arise in order to
achieve a win-win?
