Medieval Africa was in part defined by the Kingdoms of Ghana, Mali, and Songhay which together lasted from 790-1600. As the map below indicates, all three civilizations existed along the Niger River. They shared similar cultural attributes and trading routes and all were long-lasting and considered highly successful Kingdoms. The most famous of the three was the Kingdom of Mali once led by Mansa Musa (from last week).

Ghana, Mali, Songhay Map

Some good (and maybe not so good) sources survive to provide a history of the area including the report on Mansa Musa from last week.  This weeks Document Analysis focuses mostly on the Kingdom of Mali, the heir to Ghana, with its capital at Timbuktu. I have also included a primary source/account by Leo Africanus one of the greatest explores of the age and some recovered artifacts from Mali. A secondary source by Lumen explaining the Kingdoms in West Africa is also provided.

The question for the Document Analysis this week asks you to be a historian and describe (briefly) a historical aspect about Mali. What is one historical fact about Medieval Mali that you are confident is accurate? This fact can be economic, political, social, cultural, or geographical in nature. Good luck and be confident.

Read both the primary and secondary sources which look at the Kingdoms of Ghana, Mali, and Songhay focus your attention on Mali. After reading those, what is one historical fact about Mali you are confident is accurate? This fact can be economic, political, social, cultural or geographical. Be sure to use at least one primary source to complete this Document Analysis and explain why you think your fact is true.

Basic requirements:

1. Answer the question in one paragraph (c. 5 sentences).

2. Use the primary source as proof in your answer.  Include a quote from the primary source and citation.

3. In order to place the primary source in context, read and use the secondary source as background. Cite it but no need to quote.

4. Look at the rubric provided to get a better idea of how it will be graded.

5. Edit your work.
