  • What is the difference between probability and non-probability sampling? Compare and contrast the textbook and video presentation of the differences.
  • List each method of sampling discussed in Chapter 4, along with one key strength and one limitation of each method.
  • Discuss a population in criminal justice research in which a snowball sample would be useful.
4. Complete an Article Critique (10 points):  The Enemy is Among Us:  Media Images of Police in South Africa During the Transition from Apartheid to Democracy (Stewart, 2013)
In this article Stewart (2013) examined the way South African police were portrayed in the media during the transition to democracy in that nation. Stewart used probability sampling techniques.  As noted in the article, although personal encounters between police and citizens are likely to be very important for predicting the way in which citizens feel about law enforcement, media portrayals of police may be even more important (as more citizens might be expected to read a newspaper than to have personal encounter with officers).  In evaluating these media portrayals, sampling is a very important fact – as Stewart suggested. There are some potential built-in biases in the ways that a given newspaper (with a given political orientation) might be expected to portray reality.  Now that you have read the article, think about the significance of the sampling technique employed here.  Compose responses to the following:
  • Describe the sampling strategy Stewart uses in this article.
  • How might the results of the study have been different if Stewart had sampled twice as many stories from only one of the two newspapers?
  • Why do you think it was important to use stratified sampling in the selection of cases from the daily newspaper?  What problems may have been countered if Stewart had used a simple random sample instead?
5.  Compose an Annotated Bibliography (10 points). Choose two peer-reviewed articles related to a criminal justice research study (you may use the Stewart article). At least one of the articles must report on a quantitative research study.   Read both articles and keep narrative notes on how the two articles are similar/different.  Create an annotated bibliography for one of the two articles.  The annotated bib must be between 100 and 150 words. No fewer or no more.  The bibliography will be one paragraph and include the following sentences:
  • A sentence that tells the purpose of the study (refer to the studies by the authors’ names, using proper APA 7th edition  in-text [narrative or parenthetical] citations);
  • Two sentences that tell the methodology (what was the sample and how was data collected);
  • One sentence that tells how the data was analyzed;
  • One or two sentences that tell significant findings/results;
  • One or two sentences that tell how the study  or the study results compared/contrasted with the other study(article) you reviewed (use connecting words [similar to, in contrast to, etc…] to link the two sources); and
  • A concluding sentence that tells why this article would be beneficial  to readers.  The last sentence of the paragraph should be worded in the following manner:  "This article would be beneficial to (fill in the blanks) because (fill in the blanks)…."
