Local liberalism II Discussion assignment minimum 150 words
we compared rural communities of Veracruz and Yucatn according to how they interpreted early 19-th century liberalism. This week, Chassen-Lpez will discuss changes in liberalism towards the end of the 19th century, and continued rural and Indigenous reactions to the same. This will set us up to talk about the dictatorship of Porfirio Daz (1876-1911), the topic of the next two weeks.
Task: Discussing campesino (rural subsistence farmer) repertoires of collective action, Chassen-Lpez describes “informal negotiations, litigation, political action, patronage, defiance, and finally, violence” (2004: 330) as options.
In your post, describe how two of these options were used in the Juchitn case that the author discusses.

One collective action the Juchitn campesinos took to fight for traditional rights such as communal land and commerce privileges was economic and political defiance. The Juchitn community demonstrated this characteristic of openly defying economic policies by ignoring the prohibitions to use the salt flats and pasturelands and seizing livestock as well as acts including land invasion and/or occupation, embargo or stealing of livestock, and engaging in contraband (Chassen-Lpex, 2004, 333). Similarly, they also performed acts of political resistance to defy local leaders, such as the continuation of public assemblies (Chassen-Lpex, 2004, 333). Another measure the Juchitn campesinos conducted other than political resistance was political patronage. Their patronage was of an opportunistic nature, not fluctuating based off political allegiance but rather who could promote their objectives in various contexts. One instance of this fluctuation was their support of the Liberals against the Polkos, but also later supporting Conservative Plan of Jalisco in 1852 (Chassen-Lpex, 2004, 332).
