Topic: Globalization creates both opportunities and challenges. It brings both progress and degradation. It can improve people’s rights and living conditions while causing a loss of traditions and unique cultures. It can help bring democracy and lift people out of poverty. It shifts jobs and opens new markets, which could create new jobs at home. Clearly, globalization has allowed companies to produce higher quality products and still be able to sell them at lower prices. This is good for global consumers who save money on purchases and this is good for global corporations who save money on production. But, is it for the greater good? There are many pros and cons for globalization:
For the paper:
1) Identify and analyze the process of globalization and the relevant factors that have driven it (in general, not specific to your country).
2) In relation to your country, (not generally or globally) discuss the major impacts of globalization (negative and positive) in relation to: (i.e., explain how globalization has affected each point in your country).
a) global business
b) cultures
c) ethics
d) societies
e) the people within your country
In order to ensure that you are answering these points correctly (specifically to your country), start each point with; “Globalization has affected: a, b, c, d, e in (your country) by…”
3) In setting up international operations within your country,
a) who is / are the most important stakeholder(s); host country employees, home country employees, host country residents / government, home country residents / government, shareholders (owners), management, customers? (Identify the top two or three only – in order of importance – and state why).
b) how must a company manage / act within your country to recognize these stakeholders?
4) Identify and analyze relevant problems and opportunities for an international company
doing business in your country. Is it a good place to do business? Is it an easy place to do business? What are its strengths and weakness? What are the opportunities? (Every country has opportunities, even if it is overcoming a negative). Don’t mention the obvious; language, food, dress, etc. stick with business.
5) Cite how at least two foreign companies (i.e. companies from outside your country) that have set up operations within your country and responded to globalization positively, negatively or both. This question is about how they (the two companies) have responded to the factors that make up globalization and the effects of globalization within your country; people, planet, culture, society, technology, etc. It is not about how they set up business in the country or about their business success in your country, unless their success can be linked to their responses to globalization. Do not include Nike, Apple, Starbucks, McDonalds or any American fast food company (dig a bit deeper).
6) After considering everything above, provide your own view on:
a) how globalization has been both a global benefit and a cause for concern
(globally)
b) if globalization has had a total net effect that is positive or negative on your
country (your country only)
To receive full credit:
A) You will need to do some independent research on the idea of globalization
B) Your paper should be a minimum of 3000 words plus your reference page
C) Your references should be noted in the body of your paper by a number (1,2,3, etc.) with the corresponding number next to the source on your reference page. Take care to recognize all input that is not your own (be very careful about this)
D) If you are using a source word-for-word, use quotation marks
E) Breakdown your paper / answers by clearly identifying the questions / answers 1 – 6. Every new answer needs to start with a number. Do not combine or run on answers (makes it hard to grade or know what question you are working on). Question 2 should be 2a, 2b, 2c, etc. Ditto questions 3 and 6. Failure to do this will result in a lower grade.
