History of Menswear

The way a culture clothes its men often depends on how that culture understands the male body. 

First, reflect on the three artworks provided below.

1. How do cultural ideas like arete, social hierarchies, and political authority in Egypt, Greece, and Rome help determine how the bodies and garments in these artworks are represented? Compare and contrast these three images to respond.

Then, connect your ideas to today.

2. What cultural ideals are present in today’s society (you may limit your ideas to NYC, to America, to western society, or a global perspective) that help determine how male bodies/masculine-presenting bodies are represented?  Use the research from one outside book or article as part of your response.
