Abstract Imagery a la Georgia O’Keeffe
● Step 1: Review the reading on page in the on abstracted sexual imagery paying special
attention to the section of Georgia O’Keeffe.
● Step 2: Research the artwork of Georgia O’Keeffe.
● Step 3: Remember that the text defines abstract as ”Visual imagery that does not copy
reality. This might be achieved by simplifying, distorting, or exaggerating objects from
nature.”
● Step 4: Contemplate how you might abstract the image of a calla lily photograph below. How would
you simplify, distort, or exaggerate it? Make several quick sketches on a piece of paper. How can your drawing be flower-like without actually being a flower? How can it exhibit some of the same elements but not still be a flower. There are degrees of abstraction…make sure you have taken it far enough.
● Step 5: Using whatever media you choose and O’Keeffe’s work as an inspiration, create
a drawing/painting/sculpture of an abstract calla lily.
● Step 6: Photograph or scan your final result and upload it to Assignments.
