Students will write five short papers 3-4 pages in length. Each paper will constitute either 5% or 10% of your final grade. The papers should use 12-point font, double-spacing and standard right and left margins. Short papers will penalized, including papers that are/use: large font, wide margins, excessive space between paragraphs, unnecessary tabbing, more than a three line header, or any other such practice. All papers should include the main texts as references. In addition to the course’s main texts, you should use two additional outside references for each paper, either journal or text. Papers will be evaluated on the following dimensions: quality of the writing, the degree to which the paper fulfills the assignment, the complexity of the argumentation, and the degree to which theory and major concepts are employed. Once again, please be cognizant of my position on plagiarism; I will not hesitate to take action.
For each paper, you will be introduced to two theoretical perspectives and one sociological concept. You will need to address the assigned concept (either the self, ideology, Empiricism, inequality, or positivism) from both theoretical perspectives. This will necessitate that you “think through” both perspectives in terms of how representatives would grapple with the concept.
For this paper, you will address ideology from Neo-Concflict and Critical Theory perspectives.
