This week we are exploring how anthropologists study politics and how governing structures influence and are influenced by culture. We are primarily focusing on types of political organizations and forms of leadership. In America, we practice a political organization referred to as a "state," which Miller (pg. 232) defines as "a form of political organization in which a centralized political unit encompasses many communities, a bureaucratic structure, and leaders who possess coercive power." Select an aspect of the state as practiced in America that you would like to examine. What is this aspect? Why would you like to study this? How would you study it?
