Learning Outcome: Understand various ways in which we act within social structures and socially construct our own identity within society.
For this discussion board, I would like you to consider the social networking site Facebook. If you are not familiar with it, you can easily do research on it through any of the major online news sites or search engines. If you have your own page, spend some time thinking about how you and others socially construct various realities in your profiles and postings. Then answer the following questions.
1. Using the ideas of Durkheim, what types of structure do you see reflected there? Do you think Facebook binds people together in mechanical or organic solidarity? Why? If so, where/how?
2. What types of realities do you see various people constructing there? How do we also follow conventions on Facebook?
3. Similarly, how do we engage in impression management on Facebook? Do you see evidence of front/back stages or face-saving behaviors? If so, provide examples of each.
4. How is nonverbal communication used in this setting? How about symbols? Provide several specific examples.
5. While we do not engage in face-to-face interaction on Facebook, do you think symbolic interactionists would be interested in the interactions occurring there? Why/why not?
