Week 8 Discussion – General Impressions
The Discussion Boards that accompany each module will contribute toward your attendance and participation grade in this course. You will get up to 2 points for posting a comment that addresses the weekly discussion prompt (NOTE: you must post your comment in the first week of the discussion to be eligible for the full 2 points – you may get partial credit if posted in week 2 of the discussion). You will be eligible for 1 point for each additional comment posted to someone else’s post, up to a total of 5 points/discussion. The additional comments can be posted at any time during the two weeks that the Discussion Board is open.
For this week’s discussion debrief, consider the following prompts:
1. What stood out to you the most from the videos?
2. Did you do the exercise in the PowerPoint? How would you describe the experience of making the decision about who was going to get services and who would not? Who was at the top of your list and why did you choose that child?
3. Did you take a look at the International Rights of the Child document? Why do you think the United States is one of the few countries that has NOT signed onto that treaty?
4. Anything else you want to talk about?

response 1:
Something that stood out the most to me was from the video on Human Sex Trafficking. I was shocked at the numbers we were provided with. Numbers such as the $45 million that is spent in the US online for sex trafficking, the 21 million who are enslaved into sex trafficking around the globe, 3,000 US children who are at risk of sex trafficking each year, and so many more! Hearing numbers as high as those is hard to stomach. Along with those high numbers, something else that stood out to me were things to look for in people that could be giving me clear signs of trafficking. The experience of having to make a decision like that was so much more difficult than I thought it was going to be. I sat thinking of as many outcomes as I could and decided that my top choice would have the be the 3 year old African American little girl. I chose her because, unlike the other children, she was still currently in her situation. The other kids were already with other relatives or shelters but she was still living with her biological parents. Along with that, she is living in a household that has had violence in it. That is something that no child should have to be around. She is also the youngest out of the list aside from the 2 month old baby but that child is with the mother who is taking parenting classes in order to become a better mom. The 3 year old is around violence at a young age and that could have a negative affect on her growing up due to the fact that it is easy to influence a child so young. After reviewing the document, I would say I think the US has not signed this document because they believe that including other parties in the decision process might be best because you can have the views of others on a situation voicing some of their concerns on what they think would be best for the child. I believe that the US can sometimes believe that they know what is better for a child over the child’s parents at times.
response 2:
After going over the material what stood out to me most is the child sex trafficking in Michigan video. It is sickening to know how often this happens and to even think about all those individuals who suffered and went through that traumatic cause. It makes me wonder how many children and humans went missing and never were found or heard from again. I believe that there should be more traffic sweeps that need to be done to save those who are in danger. I would describe trying to choose the decision of who was going to get services as very hard. I believe all children should receive equal treatment. The child that is at the top I choose was the 3-year-old African American female and the reason is that she has a placement of history of domestic violence and the three-year-old should not have to witness it or go through it. After viewing the international rights of the child document, I assume that the United States has not signed onto it because they believe it is better served by constitutional democracy.
